Jefferson races away from St. Mel

ROCKFORD - Twelve J-Hawks scored, led by 19 points by Brenden Moss, in Jefferson's 73-24 win over Chicago Providence St. Mel.

The Knights are the defending IHSA Class 1A state champions but all five starters from the title team graduated and St. Mel has struggled to score in its three 205 Tip-Off Classic games.

The Knights were hanging with the undefeated J-Hawks, down 23-13 in the second quarter when Jefferson went on a 17-0 run to close out the half. Lajuan Morris added 12 points for the J-Hawks, who can finish a perfect 4-0 if they can beat Chicago Perspectives in the final game of the day at Jefferson.

Ivan Haggard, a 5-8 freshman, led St. Mel with nine points.
