The 24 misses, however, nearly turned out to be costly.

Auburn holds off Larkin rally for second Tip-Off Classic win

ROCKFORD -- Rockford Auburn used a barrage of three-pointers to build a lead against Elgin Larkin and then had just enough defense to overcome poor free-throw shooting as the Knights held on for a 72-65 win.

The Knights hit eight three-pointers in the first half to race out to a 46-35 lead on the third night of the 205 Tip-Off Classic. Auburn pushed the lead to 14 points in the third quarter before the Royals began chipping away.

Larkin, behind 6-6 junior forward Christian Negron, eventually cut the lead to 67-63 but could get no closer. Auburn helped the Royals get back into the game by making just six of 15 free throws in the final quarter.

Trayvon Tyler led Auburn at both ends of the floor. The 6-1 senior guard scored 26 points and was the primary defender on Negron. Negron, who is being recruited by several major Division 1 college basketball programs, ended up with 22 points, but he was never the dominant force.

Daevion Dixon added 13 points for Auburn and Devon Richardson and Terry Ford had nine points each. The Knights improved to 2-0 in the tournament. A.J. Hunter had 14 points for Elgin Larkin and Keyvon Kyles chipped in 12. The Royals dropped to 1-1.

Parker outlasts East, 64-59

ROCKFORD -- Just when it appeared the tournament's first close game might go into overtime, a technical foul helped Janesville Parker to a 64-59 victory at East Wednesday afternoon.

The E-Rabs used an 11-0 run at the start of the second half to wipe out a 31-21 halftime deficit, but never led by more than two points after that.

East still had a chance in the last 10 seconds, trailing 60-59 with the ball, but a no-call which resulted in a turnover led to a technical foul on the East bench. Parker cashed four free throws in the final 5.8 seconds to close out the win in the season opener for both teams.

Parker's Carlos Campos led all scorers with 20 points. Empereuer added 17 and Marq Brooks 11 for the Vikings, who next play Elgin Larkin at 3 p.m. Saturday at Auburn. Sophomore Scott Gowan led East with 16 points. Junior Allan Robinson added 12 and freshman Chris Burnell had 11.
