Whitney Young wins Tip-Off Classic by drubbing Auburn

ROCKFORD - Chicago Whitney Young, with its speed, size and athleticism, was going to be a tough matchup with a young, undersized Auburn team on its best day.

When Auburn's shooting touch deserted it, the Knights had no chance.

Chicago Whitney Young finished its first trip to the 205 Tip-Off Classic 5-0 by beating Auburn in every quarter. Auburn hit only one 3-point shot on the night. That was by Yahmir Muhammad, and Muhammad was the only Auburn to score more than four points. The senior guard's 21 points was half of the team's total output.

Javon Freeman and Myles Baker scored 14 points each for the Dolphins, the defending IHSA 4A State Champions, who continue the road show Sunday at Navy Pier against Chicago Fenwick.

Auburn cruises past Hyde Park

Yahmir Muhammad scored 21 points and Auburn outran, outhustled, outshot and outrebounded Hyde Park to score a 73-53 victory in Saturday's opening game at Auburn.

The winners, now 2-1 in the RPS205 Tip-Off Classic, led only 29-27 early in the third quarter but scored 19 of the next 28 points to carry a 48-36 lead into the final period. Muhammad had 11 of his points in the third quarter.

DiMaggio Aldridge took over for the Knights in the fourth quarter, scoring nine of his 11 points as Auburn continued to build its lead. Jamus Neal contributed 13 points to the Auburn attack.

Hyde Park, which lost a Tip-Off Classic game for the first time after seven victories, was led by Andrew Anderson's 15 points. Braijon Johnson and Dequan Fairley had 10 each for the Thunderbirds.

Jefferson finds new weapons in beatdown of Larkin

ROCKFORD - MyQuion Garrett exploded for 26 points and Jefferson got important contributions from seven other players in an impressive 69-58 win over Elgin Larkin.

The Royals' 6-10 center Jalen Shaw scored Larkin's first eight points, but he also picked up two quick fouls and played just five minutes in the first half. Without Shaw, Jefferson attacked with Garrett scoring 14 points in the first two quarters as the J-Hawks built a 34-20 lead.

In the third quarter, the J-Hawks got a major scare. Senior guard Quillen Dixon, who averaged 17 points per game in the first three games of the Tip-Off Classic, drove the lane against Shaw and landed awkwardly. He was helped off the floor with a knee injury and didn't return.

Without Dixon, who went scoreless in the game, Jefferson got contributions from several. Terry Ford, coming off a tournament-record 32 points against Chicago St. Rita, scored 15. Jyaire Robinson had nine. Delano Newble, an afterthought much of the first three games, had eight, and Horace Massey scored five straight points when Larkin cut the lead down to seven points in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Larkin kept trying to make a run behind Shaw and Anthony Lynch, but Jefferson made 12 of 14 free throws and the Royals never got the lead under 10 in the final eight minutes.

Jefferson finished the Tip-Off Classic with a 3-1 mark with its only loss against Chicago Whitney Young.

Elgin Larkin went 2-2. Shaw, the all-time leading career scorer in the Classic, scored 21 points and Lynch ended with 16. Pierre Black, who entered the game averaging 14 points and who hit five 3-pointers in a win over Jefferson in last year's Tip-Off Classic, was held to just three.

Perspectives hold off Pretzels

ROCKFORD - A balanced attack by Chicago Perspectives was just enough to knock off Freeport, 45-43, Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves had five players score between five and nine points. Di'Kimrick Hooks led with nine points, but it was the final three free throws by Marshawn Goodwill that proved to be the difference.

Kijuan Burns was the main threat for Freeport, which was without Myterrion Carter. Burns scored 18 points, but he fouled out with more than three minutes to play.

Jefferson downs St. Rita behind record-breaking Ford

ROCKFORD - Jefferson guard Terry Ford set a pair of 205 Tip-Off Classic records in a 63-54 win over Chicago St. Rita.

The 6-1 guard hit eight 3-pointers on the way to 32 points. The 3-pointers and points both are single-game Classic records.

Ford was especially deadly in the second and third quarters when he scored 26 of the 35 points for Jefferson. Behind Ford's barrage, Jefferson went from trailing 17-12 at the end of the first quarter to a 47-45 lead in the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Jefferson hit eight of 10 free throws to pull away.

St. Rita was playing for the Classic title. The Mustangs entered the game 4-0 and had given up so few points that a win would have clinched the championship. Jordan Matthews did his part for St. Rita with 15 points. Jeremaih Oden, who came in averaging 15 points per game, was held to seven.

MyQuion Garrett added 11 for Jefferson, which is 2-1 and plays Elgin Larkin at 1 p.m., and Quillen Dixon chipped in 10.
