Auburn throttles Larkin

ROCKFORD - Auburn's signature pressure defense held Elgin Larkin to just 32 points over the first three quarters as the Knights improved to 2-2 with a 67-53 win in the last game of the 2019 205 Tip-Off Classic.

Auburn played perhaps the toughest schedule, dropping games to Indianapolis Pike and Chicago Bogan - those schools were a combined 8-0 - and beating North Chicago and Elgin Larkin.

Against Larkin, Haniefe Johnson was again the offensive catalyst. He scored 17 points, leading the Knights in points for the third time in four games. Le'Troy Hunter added 12, Javante Mackey 11 and De-Arious Maxey 10.

Two years ago, Elgin Larkin made it to the IHSA Class 4A semifinals. Last year was a rebuilding season and the Royals came to Rockford this year with a talented but young team. Its starting guards, Damari Wheeler-Thomas and Fernando Perez Jr., are sophomores. Perez played well, scoring 24 points, but the Knights held Wheeler-Thomas to six points.

Harlem wins OT thriller to go 3-1 in Tip-Off Classic

ROCKFORD - Lathan Lewis, a sophomore guard, hit a layup as time expired to cap off a wild final 20 seconds in Harlem's 54-53 overtime win over Chicago Perspectives.

Two free throws by Dominic McCarren gave Harlem a 52-51 lead with 55.8 seconds left in overtime. Chicago Perspectives turned the ball over with 20 seconds left, but Kenny Daniel stole the ball back and drove in for a lunging layup with seven seconds left. Harlem's Trenton Tucker took the inbounds pass and threw it up the floor to Lewis who drove in and scored over two Wolves as the buzzer sounded.

The win improved Harlem to 3-1 in its first time in the 205 Tip-Off Classic and represented a role reversal. In its first three games, the Huskies built leads of at least 19 points in the first half only to see its oppenents rally with strong second halves.

Friday, Harlem struggled with its shooting throughout and trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half. Harlem didn't get its first lead until 2:50 was left in the fourth quarter on two free throws by Lewis.

Harlem's Austin Casteel had another strong effort with 15 points. The next highest scorers were three players, including Lewis, with six points each. Raymond Walson led Perspectives with 17 points, but he didn't score in the fourth quarter or overtime. Caleb Miller, who came into the game averaging 21 points, was held to 10.

Perspectives finished the Tip-Off Classic a frustrating 1-3. The Wolves led Guilford most of its first game before falling 63-54 and then lost overtime games to Jefferson and Harlem.

Bogan blows out Auburn to win 205 Tip-Off Classic

ROCKFORD - The Chicago Bogan Bengals closed the first half against Auburn with a 21-1 run and cruised to a 63-34 win over the Knights in the second game of four today at Auburn.

It was Bogan's fifth win in five tries, giving the Bengals the Tip-Off Classic title in its first try.

Auburn kept it close for a while. The Knights trailed 12-9 at the end of the first quarter and scored the first three points of the second to tie the game. Bogan's Kyndall Davis, a 6-6 junior, scored on a dunk off an inbounds play, which ignited the lengthy Bogan run.

Guards Darrion Jones and Atione Bloxton led the Bengals with 13 points each and 6-9 Tremeary Fraley added 10 for Bogan, which had nine players score. Haniefe Johnson led Auburn with 16 points. No lother Knight scored more than four.

East beats St. Mel, evens record

ROCKFORD - East reached the .500 mark at 2-2 with a 53-34 victory over Chicago Providence St. Mel in Saturday's final game at East.

Jaedyn Brannan-Davis led East with 16 points. St. Mel got 12 points from Ivan Haggard and 10 from Titus Ervin. The Knights, who had to replace all five starters from last year's IHSA Class 1A title team struggled to score all week. The 34 points against East was the Knights' high in four games.

East, the defending NIC-10 champions, opens conference play on Wednesday at home against Jefferson, which went 4-0 in the 205 Tip-Off Classic.

ROCKFORD - Unbeaten Chicago Bogan rolled up an early lead and coasted past winless Elgin Larkin, 75-39, in the middle game of Saturday's tripleheader at East.

Bogan led only 15-9 after one quarter but outscored the Royals 47-21 in the middle two periods to win going away.

Antione Bloxton and Darrion Jones paced Bogan's balanced scoring attack with 10 points each. Larkin's Fernando Perez, a sophomore, led all scorers with 16 points.

Guilford pulls away from North Chicago

ROCKFORD - Guilford finished the 205 Tip-Off Classic 3-1 after steadily pulling away from North Chicago.

The Vikings led 13-10 after the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime, but then outscored North Chicago 18-9 in the third quarter. Tyler Knuth finished a strong Tip-Off Classic with 16 points. The 6-4 senior led the Vikings in scoring in three of the four games. Jack Holmstrom, playing his first game because of an ankle injury, added 11 and Thomas Stephenson added 10.

Guilford opens NIC-10 play Wednesday night at home against Belvidere North. The senior-dominated team last year accomplished Guilford's first winning season since 2006-2007.

North Chicago had a frustrating trip to Rockford. The Vikings held 6-7 senior forward Ricky Irby to just two points. Steven Rodriguez did his best to pick up the slack, scoring 23 points, but it wasn't nearly enough for the Warhawks, who went 0-5 on the week.

East finally overcomes North Chicago

ROCKFORD - Back-to-back three-pointers by Josh Crawford finally put East High School ahead and the E-Rabs went on to score a 66-57 victory over North Chicago in the opener of a triple header in the East guy Saturday.

The second of Crawford's three-pointers gave East a 56-54 lead, the E-Rabs' first of the game, at the 2:26 mark of the fourth quarter. That wiped out an 11-point advantage (27-16) North Chicago built in the second quarter and a seven-point edge (50-43) the Warhawks enjoyed in the fourth period.

East eventually built its lead to 66-54 on two free throws by Pashens Harris, two baskets sandwiched arond two free throws by Daylon Lambert  and two free throws by Crawford.

It was East's first win of the season after losses to Indianapolis Pike and Chicago Bogan.

Crawford and Jaedyn Brannon-Davis led East with 14 points each. Ricky Irby had 20 points for North Chicago (0-3).

East rally falls just short against Chicago Bogan

ROCKFORD - The East E-Rabs' rally from a 16-point third-quarter deficit fell just short against Chicago Bogan as East dropped the last 205 Tip-Off Classic game of the night, 67-63.

The Bogan Bengals led 35-25 and pushed the lead to 58-42 before the E-Rabs mounted a furious comeback. Justin Johnson's corner 3-point shot with 1:02 left cut the lead to 65-63. The E-Rabs got the ball one more time, but they missed two free-throws and a jump shot that would have tied the game all in the final 8.2 seconds.

Still, it was an inspired effort for the E-Rabs, who chose to rest Markarious Luster because of an ankle injury. Josh Crawford led East with 24 points, Johnson added 14 and Elijah Dixon had 11. Better free-throw shooting would have put East over the top. The E-Rabs were a perfect eight-for-eight in the first three quarters but just two-for-eight in the final quarter.

Antione Bloxton led Bogan with 17 points. The Bengals are 3-0 and have two games Saturday.

Jefferson holds off Perspectives to go 4-0

ROCKFORD - It took four extra minutes, but the Jefferson J-Hawks finished a perfect run in the 205 Tip-Off Classic with a 64-60 win over Chicago Perspectives.

Brenden Moss scored five of his 13 points in overtime. Latrell Graham finished with 14 points and Antonio Leavy scored 14 as well.

Jefferson led 24-21 at halftime but the Wolves rallied behind Caleb Miller. Miller scored a tournament-high 29 points with 19 of those coming in the second half.

Jefferson gave up 219 points in four games. If Chicago Bogan goes 4-0, the tournament championship likely will come down to which team gave up the fewest points.

Harlem moves to 2-1 with win over Larkin

ROCKFORD - For the third straight game, Harlem built a big first-half lead and for the second time the Huskies were able to hold on to it.

Powered by 14 first-half points from Austin Casteel, Harlem jumped out to a 40-20 lead over Elgin Larkin. The Royals, though, scored the final four points of the first half and first eight of the second to get back into the game.

Larkin eventually cut the deficit to six points in the fourth quarter, but two 3-point shots from Trey DiGiovanni righted the ship as Harlem won 60-50.

Casteel finished with 18 points and DiGiovanni had 12. The 6-1 senior has 12 field goals in three 205 Tip-Off Classic games, all from behind the 3-point line.

Damari Wheeler-Thomas led Larkin with 22 points. The 5-11 sophomore is the leading scorer in the tournament with 60 points in three games.
