ROCKFORD - Proviso West made short work of the Guilford Vikings Saturday night, cruising to the 2016 Tip-Off Class boys basketball tournament title.
The Panthers jumped off to a 12-0 lead at East High School and an 18-3 advantage after one quarter en route to a 66-41 triumph. Proviso West, one of two schools to play five tournament games, finished 4-1.
The door opened for Proviso West to win the tournament when Auburn lost to Indianapolis Pike Saturday afternoon.
Proviso West lost its tournament opener to Jefferson, then dispatched East, Freeport, Belvidere and Guilford, playing two games Friday and another two on Saturday.
Thirteen Panthers scored in the Guilford game with only Robert Hill in double figures with 12 points. Guilford was led Raheem Gregg's 13-point effort. Dorian Jones had 11 for the Vikings, who finished the tournament 1-3.
