Second-half defense key in Whitney Young win over Jefferson

ROCKFORD - Chicago Whitney Young turned a shootout into a defensive scrum as it rallied in the second half to beat Jefferson, 80-72, in the final 205 Tip-Off Classic game of a busy Wednesday.

Jefferson, which was making its season debut, came out firing, hitting five three-point shots in the first quarter as the J-Hawks raced out to a 19-9 lead on the way to a 40-33 halftime lead.

In the NIC-10, Jefferson is known for its defensive pressure. Whitney Young though is the defending IHSA 4A state champions and it flipped the script on the J-Hawks. The Dolphins forced several turnovers in the third quarter and fourth quarter to erase the lead and build an 11-point advantage in the fourth quarter. A couple late three-pointers by Jefferson narrowed the final score.

Jy'Aire Robinson was impressive in his debut for Jefferson, scoring 13 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. Terry Ford and Quillen Dixon had 17 and My'Quion Garrett had 14.

The J-Hawks play Chicago Perspectives Friday then finish up the tournament Saturday with games against Chicago St. Rita and Elgin Larkin.

Javon Freeman missed much of the first half for Whitney Young after getting two charging fouls. He turned it on in the second half, scoring 16 of his team-high 19 points in the third and fourth quarters. Myles Baker added 18. Once the Dolphins gained control of the game, they wouldn't let Jefferson make a run, hitting 12 of their 15 free throws in the fourth quarter.

The Dolphins play Elgin Larkin Friday at 1 p.m. at Guilford and then wrap up the tournament against Auburn on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
