Guilford comeback falls short against Hyde Park

ROCKFORD - The Guilford Vikings started slow against Chicago Hyde Park and finished strong but still fell short, 53-48.

The Admirals were making their season debut and stifled Guilford for much of the first half, building a 23-11 lead with 90 seconds to play in the second quarter.

The Vikings finished the first half with a 7-0 run and kept chipping away in the second. A three-point shot by Tyler Knuth brought Guilford within one, 47-46, with 1:21 to play. Hyde Park though held on because of solid free throw shooting. The Admirals made 10 of 13 from the line in the final quarter.

Hyde Park now is 7-0 in 205 Tip-Off Classic play, going 4-0 in 2015, 2-0 in 2016 and winning its opener Saturday. The Admirals play Auburn tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Auburn. Dequan Fairley led Hyde Park with 19 points and Ronald Williams added 12.

Jamil Jones led Guilford (1-2) with 11 points and Knuth finished with 10. The Vikings play Chicago Perspectives tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at Auburn.
