Auburn defense stifles Hollywood McArthur

ROCKFORD - The host Auburn Knights shut down Florida's Hollywood McArthur in the second half in a 55-41 win on the first night of the 205 Tip-Off Classic.

The Knights led 25-24 at halftime and then held the Mustangs to three points over the first 11 minutes of the second half as they built an 11-point lead.

Poor free-throw shooting though allowed the Mustangs to hang around - Auburn was 23-43 in free throws - and Javier Zapata hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to 46-41 in the fourth before the Knights pulled away.

One thing that quickly become clear Monday is that Auburn's fortunes this year rest largely on senior guard Yahmir Muhammad's slim shoulders. Muhammad scored 25 points. Jamus Neal with 10 was the only other offensive threat.

Isiah Woodstock was the only McArthur player in double-figures with 12 points.

  1. Excellent analysis of the game. It was exactly as it happened. Auburn needs to work on their Free throws. They could have sealed this game by the 4th Quarter.
