East St. Louis fends off Rockford East

ROCKFORD - The East St. Louis Fliers used a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter to hold off a pesky Rockford East team, 59-48, in the final game at East High School Friday night.

Initially, it looked like the Fliers would win in a runaway. Christian Jones scored nine first-quarter points as East St. Louis jumped out to a 22-9 lead after eight minutes.

Rockford East, though, outscored the Fliers 11-3 in the second quarter and then took the lead, 38-37, at the end of the third quarter.

Jones, who has committed to play NCAA Division I college basketball for the University of Missouri, took over again in the fourth. He scored 20 of the Fliers' 22 points in the final eight minutes. Macaleab Rich added 18 points for East St. Louis, which will play Harlem and Guilford tomorrow at Jefferson High School.

The E-Rabs were led by Rashard Young's 15 points and Malik Bates added 12. East plays Chicago Perspectives and Elgin Larkin tomorrow at East.
