Bankole, Jefferson too much for McArthur

ROCKFORD - Mike Bankole, a last-minute addition to the starting lineup, scored 24 points to lead Jefferson to a 78-59 victory over the McArthur Mustangs from Hollywood, Florida Wednesday afternoon at Jefferson.

The J-Hawks took a 23-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back, although McArthur narrowed the lead to five points several times in the second and third quarters.

Bankole, a 6-foot-1 senior, popped in three two-pointers and six three-pointers as Jefferson improved to 2-0 on the season and in the Tip-off Classic.

McArthur finished the tournament 2-2 and flew home following the game.

Bankole was inserted into the starting lineup after 5-7 sophomore TJ Stephenson was injured during pregame warmups. The extent of Stephenson’s injury was not available.

Trevor Ward and Damien Alford had 12 points apiece to lead McArthur.

Perspectives holds off Royals rally

ROCKFORD - Chicago Perspectives held on for a 66-64 win over Elgin Larkin after the Royals nearly rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final three minutes.

Powered by Caleb Miller's 17 points and 14 from RJ Walson, the Chicago charter school held a 64-52 lead in the fourth quarter in the first Wednesday game at Auburn High School. The Royals, though, scored the next 11 points and had the ball with four seconds left, trailing by two. McArthur rallies to beat Harlem in overtime

ROCKFORD - The McArthur Mustangs dug themselves out of a 19-point hole to knock off Machesney Park Harlem, 71-65, at Jefferson High School.

McArthur played the late game at East Tuesday and then had to get up for a 9 a.m. contest with the Huskies. The Mustangs looked sleepy, falling behind 29-10 in the second quarter.

McArthur, though, blitzed the Huskies in the second half. They clawed back into the game by outscoring Harlem 21-7 in the third quarter.

Trevor Ward led the Mustangs with 15 points, 12 of those in the second half. Emanuel Zayas had 13, Tyshaun Daniels 12 and Jordan Howard 11.

Despite the loss, it was a promising start for Harlem, which is replacing five starters from last year and lost their leading scorer in the summer to a knee injury. Tarek Abdel-Kireem led all scorers with 16 points, Trey DiGiovanni had 12 and Dominic Dawsey 11.
