Bogan rallies for overtime win over Winnebago

ROCKFORD - Winnebago signed up for just one game at this week's 205 Tip-Off Classic so the Indians decided to get in extra work.

Winnebago battled the Chicago Bogan Bengals for two overtimes before falling 71-70 Friday night at Jefferson High School.

Winnebago led 32-18 at halftime before the Bengals staged a comeback. Bogan tied the game at 50 on a basket by Terrion Langston and took a 54-52 lead with 11 seconds to play on a hoop by Jarvis McNeal Jr. Carl Firch scored on a layup to send the game into overtime.

Firch's basket put Winnebago ahead 70-68, but Dontrell Dixon hit a three-pointer from the corner with 5.3 seconds left in the second overtime for the winning basket.

Firch led Winnebago with 26 points and Ray Maurchie added 22. Langston led Bogan with 26 points and Jaybari Moore had 15. Dixon added 11. The Bengals won despite making just three of 11 free throws.

Bogan improved to 2-1 for the 205 Tip-Off Classic. The Bengals play DRW College Prep Saturday at East at 4:30 p.m.

Larkin holds off Harlem

ROCKFORD - Elgin Larkin moved to a perfect 4-0 in the 205 Tip-Off Classic by blitzing Harlem at the end of the second quarter and beginning of the third.

The Huskies used a zone defense to slow down star Larkin guard Damari Wheeler-Thomas and it worked for a while. Larkin and Harlem were tied at 25-25 and Wheeler-Thomas, who scored 79 points in the first three games of the Classic, had just six points.

The Royals ended the half on an 8-2 run and then scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take control of the game. While the zone was frustrating Wheeler-Thomas, it was leaving holes for senior guard Fernandez Perez Jr. Perez led Larkin with 24 points, all in the first three quarters.

Trailing by 19 after three quarters, Harlem rallied in the fourth. Alex Wilson and Lathan Lewis combined for 15 fourth-quarter points to help the Huskies cut the lead to six. They couldn't get any closer because Wheeler-Thomas wouldn't miss from the line. The senior guard hit nine of 10 free throws in the fourth to finish with 23 points.

Junior guard Deandre Young led Harlem with 22 points. Wilson had 14 and Lewis 13. The Huskies (1-2) have one game left against East St. Louis on Saturday.

Elgin Larkin also got 16 points from Jakob Blakley.

Chicago Clark has big 205 Tip-Off Classic debut

ROCKFORD - Chicago Clark's Cordy "C.J." Johnson poured in a 205 Tip-Off Classic record 35 points to lead the charter school to an 83-51 win over Guilford.

Johnson had 17 of his points in the first half, despite this the Vikings took a 33-32 lead into halftime. Bryson Hodge, who had 29 points against Elgin Larkin on Monday, had 13 points in the first two quarters.

The third quarter was all Clark. The west side Chicago school outscored Guilford 22-5 and continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter. Johnson had 10 of Clark's 22 points in the decisive quarter. Johnson broke the record of 33 points by East's Sincere Parker set back in 2018.

Mikqwon Jones added 14 for Clark, which was playing its first game ever in the 205 Tip-Off Classic.

Hodge was the only Guilford player in double-figures. He finished with 17.

Jefferson moves to 2-0 on last-second bucket

ROCKFORD - Rockford Jefferson won its ninth straight 205 Tip-Off Classic game on a last-second layup by senior guard Nigel Posley.

The layup came with 2.3 seconds left and made the J-Hawks a 63-61 winner over North Chicago.

The game was tight throughout. The Warhawks led by one after the first quarter and four at halftime. The score was tied at 53 when a North Chicago player got a technical foul. Posley made four straight free throws.

The Warhawks rallied and tied the game at 61 with nine seconds left on a tip-in by Andre Illidge Jr., setting up the heroics by Posley.

Posley led Jefferson with 18 points. Randy Johnson, a sophomore center, had 16, and La'Shawn Gathright, a freshman guard, had 14. Nasir Za Kai Young led the Warhawks with 20 points.

Larkin too much for Bogan

ROCKFORD - Elgin Larkin improved to 3-0 in the 205 Tip-Off Classic by never trailing in an 84-60 dismantling of Chicago Bogan.

The Royals scored the first five points of the game at Jefferson High School and won every quarter. Damari Wheeler-Thomas again was impressive. The future North Dakota State guard scored 23 points - he has 79 points in three games - but he had plenty of help. Fernando Perez Jr. added 19 points, sophomore Jakob Blakley had 18 and Dontrell Maxie had 17.

Junior guard Dontrell Dixon did what he could for the Bengals, scoring 20 points. Bogan lost for the first time in two trips to the 205 Tip-Off Classic.

Impressive East St. Louis thumps Auburn

ROCKFORD - East St. Louis was the big name addition to this year's 205 Tip-Off Classic and the Fliers showed why in their season-opener against Auburn.

The Fliers threw down six dunks at East High School, including three impressive slams in a row from Macaleab Rich in the third quarter, to break open a competitive game. Rich's third slam gave the Fliers a 47-30 lead and East St. Louis cruised to a 64-45 win.

East St. Louis won the IHSA Class 3A state title in 2018-2019 and a regional title in 2019-2020. The Fliers' starting lineup featured all five players standing 6-3 or taller. Auburn was able to stand up to the Fliers for two quarters.

Christian Jones, a 6-5 shooting guard, started things off for East St. Louis with a breakaway dunk as the Fliers jumped out to a 14-4 lead. Auburn chipped away behind the play of Robert Chaney. Chaney scored 14 first-half points to pull the Knights to within 31-27. Rich, though, ended the half on a breakaway dunk.

The second half, though, was all East St. Louis. Rich led the Fliers with 17 points. Demarion Brown, a 6-7 center, had 16, and Jones finished with 10.

Chaney was the only Knight to score in double-figures. He finished with 18. Auburn dropped to 1-2.

Harlem holds off Perspectives

ROCKFORD - The Harlem Huskies used a big first-half run to build up enough cushion to withstand a Chicago Perspectives run for a 65-60 win at East High School.

Perspectives, which lost its morning game to Auburn, jumped out to an 11-9 lead after a three-point shot by Darrion Mason. Harlem responded by scoring 23 of the next 31 points.

The Huskies pushed the lead to 52-33 at the end of three quarters before Perspectives, a 2A charter school, made things interesting.

The Wolves hit five three-pointers in the fourth quarter and whittled the lead to as little as five points. Still, Harlem held on for its first win of the season.

Mason was the high scorer for the game with 22 points and Jordan Lawson added 13. Harlem had 10 different players score. Junior Dane Dailing led the Huskies with 14 points and Lathan Lewis had 11.
