ROCKFORD -- Pike High School of Indianapolis opened the second half with a 10-0 run to turn a close game against Rockford Auburn into a route as the Red Devils pulled away to win 73-53.
Pike's win means Chicago Hyde Park will be the only team of the ten scheduled to play four games in the 205 Tip-Off Classic to finish 4-0. The Thunderbirds knocked off Freeport this morning at East to complete its schedule.
Auburn went 4-0 in last season's inaugural 205 Tip-Off Classic and looked to be in position to move to 3-0 in this year's tournament, trailing Pike, a perennial Indiana powerhouse, by just one at the half, 33-32. Trayvon Tyler powered the Knights with 10 first-half points.
The Red Devils though turned up the pressure in the third quarter behind Derek Hawthorne, who scored all 13 of his points in the game in the third quarter as Pike outscored Auburn 28-8.
Senior guard Justin Thomas led Pike with 18 points and Isiah James added 14 points.
Tyler finished with 22 points and was the only Knight above 10 points. Auburn struggled to keep the taller Red Devils off the boards and didn't shoot well from the outside, making just four three-pointers.
